Essays are the cornerstone of the English language — the building blocks of the corporate world. They are a physical testament to the writer’s freedom, built with words of sweat and tears to express a voice that acts as a catalyst for change and a beacon of hope for those who read it. Students will most certainly encounter essays during their high school journey, and at every turn of their life thereafter. This article provides a few tips to help students get started with English essays as part of their coursework or post-secondary applications.
1. Start With a Clear Argument: Before beginning your essay, ensure that you are completely familiar with what you’re trying to prove or convey. A strong thesis makes a good first impression and sets a strong tone for the remainder of the essay, and a weak thesis does the exact opposite.
2. Use Vocabulary that is Advanced, Elegant, and Effective: An impressive vocabulary doesn’t consist of the longest words, but the correct ones; the ones that precisely and sophisticatedly express the exact point you’re trying to make without causing the reader to reach for a dictionary every sentence. Avoid using simple words as well, forget about terms such as good, bad, thing, right, get, etc.
3. Write With Clarity, Not Complexity: The purpose of an essay is to convey your ideas well, not to lose the idea in writing that gives its reader a migraine. Use clear, short and powerful statements that aggressively — yet calmly and sophisticatedly — work to prove your point. No unnecessary words.
4. Put Transitions Everywhere: Flow and smoothness is the cornerstone of an impactful essay. Use transitional verbs such as additionally, furthermore, and moreover, along with conclusive verbs like therefore, thus, and overall.
5. Revise With Meticulous Attention To Detail: The best essays aren’t written; they’re rewritten. The number of edited drafts you have is directly proportional to your mark on that essay. Poor grammar, structure, and word choice can disrupt the flow of your writing and take away from its message.
English can be very simple! Just make sure to follow these tips to top your class!
