Grade 8
Humanities 8: This course is a combination of English and Social Studies at the grade 8 level. It is a linear course and is required to be completed for students to receive a high school diploma. The course focuses on developing students’ skills in communication and thinking, while introducing new concepts such as literary paragraphs. Students also learn about the general concept of language in the context of history through countless exciting presentations, assignments, writing samples. The mandatory prerequisite to this course is grade 7.
Grade 9
English Language Arts 9: This course builds upon the foundation previously laid by Humanities 8. It is a semester-long course and is required to be completed for students to receive a high school diploma. Students in this course will continue to develop their communication and thinking skills, while building on and advancing their writing expertise and beginning to delve into essay writing. This course is essential to a student’s journey, and is thus a mandatory semester-long course. Its prerequisite is Humanities 8 or Humanities 8 Incentive.
Grade 10
Composition and Spoken Language 10: This course supports and meaningfully supplements students in the development of their written communication through questioning, exploring, and sampling works of literature and studying them within their context. This course introduces essay writing as a means to convey a students’ opinions and thoughts regarding universal topics. Students are given the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively. The course also focuses on oral English, delving deeper than ever before into poetry and presentations to build students’ public speaking skills. This is a one semester course that gives grade 10 English credits for graduation. Its prerequisite is any full credit English 9 course.
Literary Studies and Creative Writing 10: This course is specifically targeted towards students that are keen on exploring the literature of a particular time period, geographic area, author, genre, or theme. Moreover, students will explore new and creative ways to convey their ideas, whether that be through poetry, presentations, essays, or other such assignments. The course provides students an opportunity to strengthen their writing skill through exploring and analyzing the impact of identities, memories, and stories in a range of genres and forms. Students will collaboratively and independently undertake projects to progress their own learning. This is a one semester course that gives grade 10 English credits for graduation. Its prerequisite is any full credit English 9 course.
Grade 11
Literary Studies 11: This course allows students to delve deeply into literature and writing while also teaching them the core competencies. Students can explore specific themes, periods, authors, or areas of the world through literary works in a variety of media. Students are taught to read while making critical analyses subconsciously, developing higher-level thinking and learning skills. Teachers work to teach students to enhance their development of both the receptive and expressive curricular competencies for English Language Arts. This is a one semester course that grants students grade 11 English credits for graduation. Its prerequisite is any full credit English 10 course.
Grade 12
Literary Studies 12: This course gives students the opportunity to further explore literature by giving them freedom in the pieces of media they wish to analyse. If you’re passionate about certain genres, periods, authors, and themes, this course is perfect for you as you can, under the guidance, supervision, and instruction of a teacher, enhance your reading, analyzing, and writing skills to suit the calibre of the most refined and professionally developed global citizens and leaders. You must have completed a full-credit English 11 course in order to be eligible to take this course. It is completely optional and not a required course by universities and the Ministry of Education.
Creative Writing 12: This course mainly aims to cater to students that wish to deviate from the previous courses that were focused on analysis of literature, rather than the composition of it. Students are given the opportunity to delve into writing their own poetry, stories, and much more by engaging in the exploration of personal and cultural identities, memories, and stories. students will collaborate and develop their skills through writing and design processes, celebrating successes and building off of failures. You must have completed a full-credit English 11 course in order to be eligible to take this course. It is completely optional and not a required course by universities and the Ministry of Education.
English 12: This course builds on and extends students’ previous experiences and learnings in past courses. It is designed to appeal to all students and provide them with opportunities that help them refine their ability to communicate effectively. Students will think critically and creatively about the uses of language while exploring texts from a variety of sources that reflect diverse worldviews. Ultimately, students in this course will deepen their understanding of themselves and others in a changing world as they gain insight into the diverse factors that shape identity. This is a one semester course that grants students grade 12 English credits for graduation. Its prerequisite is any full credit English 11 course.
First-Peoples English 12: This course builds upon students’ previous learning experiences in English courses. The course teaches through the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning and delves deeply into the First Peoples’ oral and written works. It is designed for all students to push them to think critically and creatively as they continue to explore, extend, and strengthen their own writing. Within a supportive community, students work individually and collaboratively to create powerful, purposeful compositions. This course meets the new graduation requirement to have 4 credits in both an Indigenous Focused course, and the English Language Arts 12 requirement for all students graduating in B.C after September 2023.
Incentive
Incentive English Courses: Incentive courses in the English context follow the same curriculum as regular courses, but challenge students with tighter deadlines, harder marking, larger tasks, and much more. Incentive courses are always ahead of regular ones — if a regular student is expected to write a 300 word paragraph, Incentive students will be expected to write 1000 word essays. This rigorous program prepares students for post secondary and naturally shapes them into leaders. Incentive students go on to become dominant scholars and represent the best of Palmer. Incentive English courses are offered from grade 8 to 11. Taking Incentive courses does require you to apply for and be accepted into the highly exclusive program.
